Reed Bed and Aerated Reed Bed Design and Build
NWS have constructed a multitude of aerated and non-aerated reed beds for the majority of Water Companies in the U.K. Each system is designed to achieve long term compliance.
Reed beds in their passive mode (without aeration) will remove solids and BOD. With aeration their performance is enhanced through increased oxygen availability and hence biological activity which will result in increased BOD reduction and ammonia removal.
Passive Horizontal Sub Surface Flow reed beds are the most commonly used in the U.K. They will provide a robust solution to solids and BOD removal. Aerated reed beds have however become more common since they were first introduced to the U.K. in 2009. NWS engineers were involved with the first U.K. systems and we continue to be at the forefront of this technology.
